ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005HA-PU17-BU 10.1-Inch Blue Netbook - 10.5 Hours Of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter)

Ordered 2 units, one black one blue, intended as Christmas gifts for my nephew and niece. I opened up the black one first. Loaded up software, configured users, upgraded memory, web cam, touch pad, keyboard, wifi N, bluetooth, everything works just fine.

I than hooked up the blue one. DOA! Tried plugged and unplugged battery, ac power, F2...no sign of any activity other than the fan and those little blue lights. Called Asus 24/7 help support. Friendly service lady but all suggestions she gave I had already tried myself before.

Amazon makes the return and replacement policy easy but the replacement is shipped via USPS. I am crossing my fingers now because I have a few games and blu-ray moves from amazon took near a month to be delivered via USPS.

As of my view on the working black one, well I consider myself as a power user. My desktop hard drive or graphic card alone costs nearly as much as this netbook already and my current laptop is the 17" MacBook Pro. So I just can't help but feel this netbook is sluggish from time to time. The plastic casing feels cheap compares to the aluminum on MackBook Pro. The touch pad is too small for me.

Bottom line is SD video playback and Skype works just fine.

I'm having the same problem as James P. in Atlanta (another reviewer).  I've owned the Asus for exactly 3 weeks.  Initially it seemed to work ok.  Then after a few days it would freeze up when I typed to fast and I had to manually reboot.  After a few more days it started rebooting on its own in the middle of my work.  Now I keep getting the "blue screen" serious errors.  As James P. wrote "it has crashed unexpectedly and displayed the blue screen of death numerous times. Even with a single Internet browser window open, the computer will unexpectedly crash and then restart. Sometimes the blue screen of death appears for no discernible reason."

I planned to call tech support to see if they could help but before I could do that I got an error message that the Ghost file was corrupted and then that NTLDR was missing when I tried to reboot.  Now the computer will not boot into Windows XP.  I had no choice but to contact amazon.com for a replacement.  I hope they don't send me another lemon since I really like the features of this netbook, if only it would function as advertised ..."

"... I purchased this little gem over a week ago and I love it!!  I wasn't sure how I would like a netbook, and I'd looked at some that seemed too small or too slow or something.  This little computer is a beautiful blue, and despite the fingerprint problem that everyone mentions, it looks great.

The keyboard really works for me.  It is smaller than a standard keyboard, but after a day or two I got used to it and now I can type pretty fast with few mistakes.

At first I wasn't sure about the fingerpad, but I like it.

I used this netbook this week when I was traveling and it works great with my Sprint MIFI so I can connect to the Internet just about anywhere I go.

I'm not real wild about Windows XP, but I will upgrade to Windows 7 in October.

I did upgrade to the 2 gig RAM, and that seems to help.  It was easy to install, but I did have to reboot the computer about 3 or 4 times and get into the BIOS to make the computer recognize the additional memory.

Overall, I am very pleased with this purchase.  It's so easy to carry this little thing around! ..."

"... I love the Eeepc's! This is the fifth one that I purchase (already had a 701, 901, and 1000he's).

First the good: This Eeepc is the best one I've tried. The design is excellent. New hinges on the display make the overall size smaller without sacrificing any spec's. RAM was easily upgraded.

Experiences:

1. I attempted upgrading the hard drive with a spare 2.5" 250GB SATA drive. Removing all the case screws underneath (plus 1 hidden under the RAM door) did not give easy access to the hard drive, although I can see it through the vents. More poking and prodding led to getting one side to open slightly but that was it. Not wanting to break it, I'm giving up until someone else posts a tear down tutorial.

2. Since I prefer Linux for OS (Arch/Debian/Ubuntu/Gentoo) and usually just install it over Windows (rather than dual-boot), my first order of business is to image the hard drive in its factory state using Acronis or partimage (in case I ever want to restore it) (also that I distrust system recovery procedures), but all attempts failed due to one reason or another, but I believe mainly was a lack of drivers for the wired ethernet.

3. So I proceeded to boot in up in the factory Windows XP without the image, and it took a while to discover (while updating and configuring everything) that there did not appear to be a wired ethernet device at all. It wasn't in the network connections, or the device manager... Puzzled, I tried to uninstall/reinstall the driver from the CD. Reinstall of the driver told me that it couldn't find any device for that driver! I finally decided to perform a system recovery and start preparing it for return to Amazon for a replacement. On a whim, I decided to boot into the newly recovered system, which went flawlessly, and to my surprise a wired ethernet device was available and working! So now I'm watching it closely, but it looks like it's working fine now.

Suggestions:

1. Make the up/down arrow keys bigger! I can respect the challenge of designing such a small keyboard that is widely regarded. This model has the noticeable change to the right Shift key now being much more prominent, however it comes at the cost of making the up and down arrow keys much too small ..."

"... I recently purchased the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA Netbook from Amazon.com. Adorama Camera fulfilled the order. While I like the netbook, it has what I consider to be a major design flaw in that the connection between the netbook and the AC Adapter is loose and sloppy, resulting in an intermittent power connection. In fact, during the first week I owned the netbook, the unit shutdown twice while it was plugged in due to the sloppy power connection. Naturally, I decided to return the netbook. It never crossed my mind that Amazon or Adorama wouldn't allow me to return it based on the problem. Boy, was I wrong. Despite all their self promoting about customer satisfaction, neither Amazon or Adorama will allow me to return the device. Both have pointed me to ASUS. My suggestion, don't buy a computer, laptop, notebook or netbook from Amazon or Adorama. Go brick & mortar. ...
